Reflections Part 1-4
Part1- What I need to know?
I want to know everything about each a physical therapist and a chiropractor because my essential question is comparing the two occupations. Also, I want to know the different treatments, how they are used, what they are used for, and how they allow for a patient to get better from their injury. This will help me in my future because I would love to one day, eventually become a Physical Therapist.
Part 2- What I know or assume?
I know that a physical therapist has to go to PT school, which takes about 3 years after your regular 4 years. I don’t know the schooling process for a chiropractor. I know the different treatments a PT uses, for example, thoracic manipulation, lumbar pivms, cervical pivms, patella mobs, knee and shoulder passive and range of motion, etc. They use scraping, cupping, electrical stim, and dry needling to help with those injuries on many patients. However, I don’t know that much about a chiropractor. I assume that a chiropratcor only uses their hands for manipulation instead of needling, scraping, and estim.
Part 3- Your Search
I have gotten a lot of information from my mentorship at the Physical Therapy Clinic, including an interview with Brendon Blake, he explained the lumbar and cervical pivms, shoulder and knee passive range of motion. Those are a couple of the hands on things they do with patients. This could be considered extremely biased, however the research I have conducted from my annotated bibliographies have backed up the treatments used in the clinic where I work and also from what Brendon told me in our interview. Also, my mentor knows a lot about chiropractic care and his information he's given me has also coincided with the information I found through my three bibliographies. Back to my essential question of Physical Therapist or Chiropractor, I agree with the treatments of a PT rather than a chiropractor therefore, I have chosen PT.
Part 4- What I discovered
My mentor, Brendon Blake, answers a lot of questions for me, he helped me understand the different treatments between the two occupations. This helped me realize how different the occupations are when even though they study the same ideas. He also gave me some insight on the schooling process which will help me in the future when deciding on where I want to attend college at the next level. This information will help me on more than just this project. It will help me in my mentorship but also at the next level, in college, in physical therapy school, in my residencies. Also, when I become a physical therapist of my own, I will be able to look back and reflect on what I learned 10 years back.
